Re: FS Frag Weekend 5 (NE Ohio Edition) - Mar 15th - 18th, 2012

Ok, I have some news, although not the best.  While waiting for confirmation of my wife's time off request, the place we were going to go got taken and the remaining places on the list all sucked for that Sunday check-in.  (damn timeshares)  However, not all was lost, as there is this place available if I check in on Saturday...  I was planning on taking that one and hope that someone can give me a ride to the airport on that Saturday.

With that said, here's my plan.

Fly in on Thursday and arrive in Cleveland at 1:05pm. (Delta)

Leave Saturday at 11:35am from the airport (so be at airport at 10:30am)

Does that seem possible to get me to the airport on Saturday at that time Smitty?

Re: FS Frag Weekend 5 (NE Ohio Edition) - Mar 15th - 18th, 2012

Hm.. on further thought/review, it seems like I can actually check in late (would need to notify them though).  Seeing that if I were to leave on Saturday and check in, I would have to drive to and from Phoenix again to get my wife, so I think I'll be ok.  When I have flights booked I'll have a better answer.  But my revised plan is basically my initial plan as before...

Thursday/Friday at 1pm pickup

Sunday at 6:45am (be there at 5:45am)

This way there's no extra driving required on my part.

Let's talk food!

Last year I made a huge pot of gumbo with 4lbs of shrimp and a mess of spicy andouille sausage.  There was plenty to go around and a good size pot left over that I'm sure Smitty put away after everybody left.  I'd be glad to make it again this year if it sounds like something the majority would like to eat for dinner one evening.  I might be willing to cook pecan pancakes for the bunch one morning as well.

Ellsworth also makes one kick ass pasta dish with his secret marinara recipe that we all enjoyed during that past two frag weekends.  So those are two dinner options.  When dinner is decided upon, we just ask that each who plan on eating toss some cash into the grocery fund.

And lastly, if you're under 21 and plan on drinking, please know that we will not be serving you alcohol.  You can go to the fridge and get it your damn self!  :   )

My trip is CONFIRMED.

Flying in Thursday at 1:05pm via Delta

Flying out Sunday at 6:45am via Delta

I will bring my laptop, but as I found out last year it was not powerful enough for gaming, so I will need a PC to use.

I'll mull it over. I'm just over in Northeast PA so it's not a long hike for me. Plus it's only a few days before my birthday. Not a bad gift :smileytongue:

Food Ideas.

Well first is there a grill avaliable, and if so I have a killer burger recipie that always goes over really well, I just hope you like 'em hot ( heat can be moderated somewhat). :smileytongue:

I also have a really good pizza recipie but for the size of crowd we look to have it might not be an easy thing to cook and would take a large ammount of time without propper equipment.

There is also my Grandmothers recipie for a breakfast dish called Eggs Lastrata its fast, easy, and delicious.

Yeah, I'm sure Meagan will still hanging around.

Looks like we're up to 10 confirmed attendees!  Give me a firm heads up on who will need computers once you guys know for sure.  I'll might need to do some building.

Also, double checking on airport times.  Looks like I'm going to need to borrow my dad's SUV as my pickup truck is poorly suited to such tasks.

My general plan is a flight to Toronto and then Amtrak to Cleveland, Ohio. I'll get a solid itinerary once I get the money for the tickets, which is basically my birthday on the 26th. I'll try to aim for the same time as some of the other guys to reduce the amount of trips you'll need to take.

I'll definitely need a PC. And I might be cooking some Spanish tapas which are just bite-sized finger foods.

I'll be bringing my rig, airport security permitting, but I'll need a monitor.  If you think you'll be running short on monitors, we can stop by Walmart and I'll grab an Acer on the way back to your place from the airport.  If we don't have time to stop back by Walmart on Sunday morning, I'll give you some cash to ship it to me when the weekend's over and then I'll return it.

I know what you're thinking and I'll gladly accept the unethical bastard label for this.  :  )

Re: FS Frag Weekend 5 (NE Ohio Edition) - Mar 15th - 18th, 2012

Mark me down as tentative, although I'll probably end up making the drive since it's not entirely far, about 6 hours give or take a bit. I would bring my thousand pound case and monitor so you don't have to worry about those things. I have like 45% of the games on the list so I think that'll be pretty good. I could also provide a fairly cheap and easy recipe for some awesome "Mexican lasagna" that my mom makes. It's basically soft taco wraps, ground beef, Mexican blend cheese and mild taco sauce layered several deep. And it's delicious, although it's also concentrated heartburn in a dish.

I will also be unable to drink any alcoholic beverages due to being stricken with this shitty Crohn's Disease. The medication I'm taking to maintain it will do some horrid liver damage if I overdo it, I'd rather not risk that. I don't think that'll be a problem though :smileyhappy:

Also if you guys don't mind, I will invite another friend of mine (Austintown Ohio I believe) to come up and meet me since I've never done so. Idk how long he'll stay though. If that's okay with you guys.

Optional dinners so far.

FiSH's Gumbo of the Gods

Ellsworth's Kick Ass Pasta

Diceu's Killer Burgers

Stalker's Mexican Lasagna (tentative)

Synch's Spanish Tatas (tentative)

Oops! Tapas.  If you can bring the other, feel free.

Anyone wanna cast a vote on what you'd like to eat?  (Freudian slips must end here).

If Spanish tatas are attending, I'll be sure to keep a close watch on the video feed. :smileywink:

As far as tapas are concerned, those are great, but they're not really a full dinner, more like really great snacks or an entree course before the main course. Sure, you can make a lot of them and completely gorge out on them, but AFAIK tapas aren't really meant to be a full dinner.

Yep, Harvester is right. I'm not making you dinner, just appetizers. :smileyhappy:

I could make a traditional Spanish meal but it's something that I guess is an acquired taste and I've seen Americans balk at it. Tapas are always good and no one ever complains. My specialties are tortilla de patata (basically a potato omelette), patatas bravas (potatoes with a spicy mayonnaise-based sauce), patatas ali-oli (garlic mayonnaise), gazpacho (cold tomato soup), abondigas (Spanish meatballs), empanadillas (Spanish fried dumplings), and my personal favorite: croquetas de pollo.

Some of these require a lot of ingredients and I don't know if American stores have them, so consider it all possibilities and nothing concrete.

^ The bravas and abondigas sound good!  As for dinner, I'm gonna vote on my own dish.  I'm a fanatic over cajun food and I rarely get to cook gumbo.  I had a blast making it for everyone last year.  It took me out of the game for like 5 hours, but everyone seemed to like it, especially Smitty.

I can't cook AT ALL but I can help clean up. Plus I'll kick in for the cost just let me know what it is. I might be late as I have thing with my wife in Pittsburgh that I might not be able to get out of. That might include Friday so I might be a Saturday AM arrival.

Fortunately my liver is in shape as I just went on my annual winter camping trip. Sadly tho I am no where near 21.

Hey Smitty, you have an extra 1155 cpu cooler that we can pop in my machine when I get there?  I'm afraid airport security's gonna give me some shit about my water cooler.  If you don't, I can buy one.  Just thought I'd ask.

Sir, can you come over here for me please? What is this? From the look of it, it looks nuclear, care to explain?

You can always check your machine as baggage and not carry on, but that's like giving your newborn to a grizzly bear. It might mother and nurture it, or more than likely just eat it as a snack.

Ha! You're right. One of the reasons I chose the Lian Li A05FNB because it's within the carry-on limits. I'll likely put my vid cards in my back pack to reduce the weight though. Plus, don't want their shifting weight to break any of the slots.

Last year's landing in Cleveland might as well have been a crash landing. We smacked that runway hard! I'm not a very frequent flyer, so I asked the guy next to me who looked like he might fly often if he thought it was a rough landing in comparison to others. He said "Oh yeah!" Picture a medium sized jet being suspended by a crane ten feet off the ground, and then dropped. That's what it was like.

No prob on the CPU cooler Fish.  Got a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ sitting new in box waiting for ya.

As for the computer as a carry on, I took my LanBox through security on my way to QuakeCon and back last year and didn't have any trouble.  Take it out of the bag and place it by itself in the bin to go through the scanner.  Same steps as a laptop.  My computer had clear sides so TSA could tell there wasn't anything bad going on in there.  Since you have solid side panels, might not be a bad idea to open the case before sending it through.  You'll get some strange looks and maybe a little extra attention from security but it shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: DISREGARD!

I got a free flight to Toronto from Madrid, Spain thanks to a friend who won it in some contest. It has to be a Canadian city, so the closest to Ohio is Toronto. I get to Toronto at noon (the absolute earliest no matter what day) but there is only one train leaving from Toronto to America and that's at 8:20am. So I might end up having to spend an entire night in Toronto just so I can leave the next day to Buffalo.

Now for some ungodly reason the only time the train leaves from Buffalo to Cleveland is at midnight. So I have to spend an entire day in Buffalo just to get to arrive in Cleveland at 3:30 in the morning. Logically, just taking a plane across Lake Erie would make a hell of a lot more sense but each flight is no less than $500 or ~$1000 for a round-trip. It will be no more than $100-$200 for a train ride.

According to Google, the drive from Toronto to Cleveland is only 5 hours. Considering that's a hell of a lot less time than a train ride I might try to find and beg a friend or two in Toronto to drive me but that's probably not going to happen.

So either I play out the plot of Trains, Planes, and Automobiles or spend all of my money on a trip to Ohio...

DISREGARD THE LAST POST!

I'll leave it up just to highlight the absurdity of America's train system. I totally forgot that there are Greyhound buses.

Tentative Itinerary

Arrive in Toronto at 10:00am, March 14th

Depart Toronto at 12:00pm

Arrive in Cleveland at 10:30pm, Wednesday the 14th

Depart Cleveland at 8:25am, Sunday the 18th

Arrive in Toronto at 5:00pm

Depart Toronto at 6:35pm March 18th

This is going to be brutal.

No kidding! I used to take a 6-7 hour bus ride (which was 3-4 by car) home from college for Thanksgiving and that was bad enough... For a 10.5 hour ride, you better pray you get a good seat next to someone that is not a fat pig and/or a smelly hobo.

There are more reasonable bus rides but they arrive at unreasonable hours. Unless Smitty is cool with picking me up at 3am.

Alright, our headcount currently stands at 12 confirmed with 6 on the tentative list.  I think the max capacity might be 14 in my house but we'll make it work.  In any case, expect a packed house.

Sync, the 10:30 time makes the most sense though we'll have to get a little creative with the chauffeuring arrangements.  The issue is that the largest car I have access to is a small SUV and won't fit you and Texans in the same trip.  I'll try and see if I can get a second driver to assist and if that fails, the worst case scenario is that the guys will just have to hang out at the airport for up to an hour while I drop you off at the LAN.  edit:  Another thought is to see if there might be more optimum times to the Akron Greyhouse station.  It's roughly the same distance from my house.

And that is awesome news Ronin.  Glad you'll have the extra time.
